What is Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate? Liquid grades and formulation use

How to read the full INCI, composition, water contribution, and process implications before adding a commercial liquid grade to a cleanser.

Ordering Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate by ingredient name alone can lead to the wrong dosage calculation. A commercial liquid grade may contain mostly water, and it may include Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate alongside the disodium salt. The full composition matters more than the shortened product description.

What Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate is

Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate is the disodium salt of N-coconut oil fatty-acid acyl derivatives of glutamic acid. It belongs to the anionic N-acyl amino acid surfactant family. The cocoyl portion represents a distribution of coconut-derived fatty-acid components, while glutamate provides the polar head.

The word “disodium” describes a more fully neutralized salt form than the corresponding monosodium name. It does not describe the amount of surfactant in a commercial product. Concentration, carrier water, and any additional glutamate salt must be read from the grade’s composition or specification.

The COSMILE Europe ingredient database lists Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate for cleansing and surfactant-cleansing functions. Health Canada’s ingredient database also identifies CAS number 68187-30-4 and the role of surfactant-cleansing agent. These references establish the ingredient identity and function. They do not define the performance of a particular supplier grade.

A liquid grade may contain two glutamate salts

KWCG-25 is described commercially as Liquid Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate because the disodium salt is its main surfactant component. Its full INCI is Aqua; Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate; Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate. Leaving the third component out of a formulation record would misstate what enters the batch.

For INNO’s current KWCG-25 grade, the declared composition is 75 percent water, 20 percent Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, and 5 percent Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate. At a 10 percent raw-material use level, the formula therefore receives 2 percent Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, 0.5 percent Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, and 7.5 percent water. That breakdown should be entered into the formula before pH, viscosity, clarity, or cost is compared.

INNO currently supplies KWCG-25 as a pale-yellow or colorless transparent liquid in a standard 200 kg pack. Those physical and packaging fields affect receiving, storage, transfer, and batch charging. They do not replace the need to check the current TDS, specification, SDS, and lot COA.

Do not use “25% active” without checking the definition

The two listed cocoyl glutamate components add up to 25 percent. That makes 25 percent a useful declared-composition basis for an early material balance. Whether a supplier document defines the same number as active matter, assay, or another test result must be confirmed from the named method.

A simple planning calculation is:

Required KWCG-25 (%) = target combined declared glutamate salts (%) / 0.25

If a screening formula needs 3 percent combined cocoyl glutamate salts on this declared basis, it would use 12 percent KWCG-25. That addition contributes 2.4 percent Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, 0.6 percent Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, and 9 percent water.

This arithmetic corrects the material balance. It does not prove that 3 percent from one salt blend will perform like 3 percent from another grade. The neutralization state, accompanying materials, and full surfactant system still differ.

Where a liquid grade fits into formulation work

A liquid glutamate grade is a practical candidate for aqueous cleansing products and production lines set up for liquid charging. Facial cleansers, shampoos, body washes, and hand washes are common development contexts for cleansing surfactants of this type. The final suitability still depends on the complete formula and the required product format.

Liquid supply removes the need to wet and disperse a concentrated powder. It also introduces substantial carrier water. In a conventional aqueous cleanser, that may be easy to accommodate. In a concentrated base, paste, or water-limited format, the 75 percent water contribution may use too much of the available formula space.

The decision should also reflect the plant. Confirm that pumps, hoses, scales, and charge vessels suit the pack and planned batch size. A liquid can simplify addition, but a 200 kg drum is not automatically convenient for every production line.

pH changes the salt balance inside the finished system

Glutamate surfactants contain ionizable carboxyl groups. As the pH changes, the balance among protonated, monosodium, and disodium forms can change. This affects the charge carried by the surfactant molecules and may alter solubility, aggregation, and interactions with co-surfactants or rheology ingredients.

This is why the supplied salt name should not be treated as a permanent description of every species present in the finished cleanser. The ingredient declaration identifies what was added. The formula pH determines the environment in which that material operates.

Raw-material pH and finished-product pH also answer different questions. A raw-material specification applies to a defined dilution, temperature, and preparation method. The finished reading belongs to the whole formula. Record both with their methods, and do not use one as a substitute for the other.

Appearance is an incoming check, not an identity test

KWCG-25 is specified as a pale-yellow or colorless transparent liquid. Receiving staff can compare a delivered lot with that description under consistent lighting and in a clean, suitable container. The observation is useful because a marked color shift, persistent haze, sediment, or separation gives the team a reason to stop and review the lot.

Appearance alone cannot confirm composition or performance. A clear sample can still fall outside a chemical specification, while an observation made at a different temperature or in a contaminated container can create a false alarm. Use the agreed sampling method, record the sample temperature and lot number, and compare the result with the current specification and COA.

If the material does not match the agreed appearance, document the condition before changing or using it. Photographs, temperature, storage history, and a retained sample give the supplier enough information to investigate. Do not correct an incoming raw material by adjusting the production formula.

Build the first trial around one clear decision

A useful trial does more than confirm that the liquid can be mixed into water. It should answer whether KWCG-25 fits the intended formulation and manufacturing route.

  1. Set the target combined cocoyl glutamate amount and calculate the KWCG-25 use level on the declared-composition basis.
  2. Subtract the water supplied by KWCG-25 from the separate batch-water charge.
  3. Add the grade through the planned aqueous-phase route under controlled agitation.
  4. Complete the surfactant blend and relevant late additions before setting final pH and viscosity.
  5. Record appearance, pH, viscosity, foam, and the stability observations that matter for the product brief.

If the formula is replacing another liquid glutamate, keep the test basis consistent. Match the declared surfactant contribution first, correct the water, and then compare the finished systems. A one-for-one raw-material swap gives little useful information when the two products carry different concentrations or salt forms.

What to send with a KWCG-25 sample request

Send INNO the target dosage form, intended surfactant system, finished-product pH range, current use-level basis, batch size, and available liquid-transfer method. State which result will decide whether the grade moves forward, such as clarity, viscosity response, foam, or process simplicity.

Then request the current TDS, SDS, specification, COA format, and a KWCG-25 sample. With the full INCI and water balance already understood, the sample can be used to answer a formulation question instead of repeating the label.
